American Public University System Appoints Dr. Ahmed Naumaan Dean, School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

Charles Town, WV, March 6, 2018 – American Public University System (APUS) today announced the appointment of Dr. Ahmed Naumaan as dean, School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). In his new leadership role, he will oversee the ongoing management,  development and assessment of the school’s diverse programs, with a primary focus on ensuring academic quality, student retention and success, and best practices in faculty teaching and learning.

A former engineer, computer science instructor, and independent higher education consultant, Dr. Naumaan brings deep experience in both academics and as a practitioner with several companies conducting research, product development and project management.

“Our innovative engineering, online science lab and other STEM programs cater to the specialized needs of working adults in both the public and private sector,” said APUS Provost Dr. Vernon Smith. “Ahmed’s extensive experience will help ensure that our curriculum remains in lock-step with the emerging learning technologies and core knowledge base most critical to successful STEM careers.”

In addition to his instructional and consulting roles, Dr. Naumaan also recently served as national dean for DeVry University’s College of Engineering & Information Sciences from 2012 – 2016, where he led the development of new degree programs and specializations in information technology and networking, software development and cybersecurity. He also oversaw ABET reaccreditation activities for the college’s engineering technology programs. Previously, as dean of Kaplan University’s School of Information Systems and Technology, he developed strategic growth plans and helped launch new program specializations.

Prior to joining Kaplan, Dr. Naumaan served as academic director for engineering programs at National Technological University (NTU), and subsequently as faculty chair and associate dean of the NTU School of Engineering after it merged with Walden University. He previously taught software engineering and was also responsible for student advising for the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. Before entering academia, he also served as principal engineer and manager for ITRON, Inc., and as principal scientist for APA Optics, Inc., receiving two patents for optical device technologies.

Dr. Naumaan received his PhD and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, where his research focused on devices and materials for integrated optics. He is also a graduate of the MBA Advantage Program from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management.
